                Document Description

CAL FIRE would provide funding to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to complete forest fuel reduction activities within the King Range National Conservation Area (KRNCA). This project includes forest fuel reduction activities, including the management of shrubs and dead trees. Project activities would include the removal and/or modification of trees and shrubs using tracked equipment, hand crews, chippers and prescribed burning. These activities will complete a network of shaded fuel breaks to decrease the severity of wildfire, help protect the communities surrounding the KRNCA from wildfire, increase forest health and help develop safe ingress and egress routes during a wildfire.

The California Environmental Quality Act does not apply to prescribed fire, thinning, or fuel reduction projects undertaken on federal lands to reduce the risk of high-severity wildfire that have been reviewed under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) if the primary role of a state or local agency is providing funding or staffing for those projects. CAL FIRE would provide funding to the BLM to reduce forest fuels on federal land. All the proposed Project activities are included in the NEPA Hazard Removal and Vegetation Management Programmatic Environmental Assessment (DOI-BLM-CA-9000-2018-0002-EA, February 2019) and Determination of NEPA Adequacy (DNA) prepared by the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Department of the Interior. – DOI-BLM-CA-N030-2020-0001-DNA signed in 2019.
